3 The Parekohe Amalgamation

The Parekohe amalgamation was to be comprised of seven blocks in the northeastern end of the reserve straddling the lower-middle reaches of both the Whakatane and the Tauranga/Waimana Rivers: Te Tuahu, Te Poroporo, Rūātoki South, Te Wairiko, Whaitiripapa, Otara, and the original Parekohe block (Figs. 1.​2 and 1.​3, amalgamation 9). At the end of the fourth season of the commission’s investigation after the amalgamation plan had been aborted, the final block list for each of these blocks was confirmed by the commissioners in the name of one or another of six hapū (Fig. 2.​1):1.the largest block, Parekohe, was shared by three hapū named in this order: Ngāi Tūranga, Te Urewera, and Ngāi Te Kapo;
